Engineered by the University of Wisconsin for classroom use, "Wisconsin Fast Plants" (Brassica rapa) complete an entire life cycle in 28-34 days under 24-hour fluorescent light in climate controlled conditions.
In response to Google's Lunar X prize, the company Paragon Space began developing a lunar greenhouse in 2009 to launch these Brassic rapa to the moon - a logical conculusion as the moon is the only place where these plants will naturally receive the 15 days of 24-hours of light they need to reach sexual maturation (flowering). Manually maintained and monitored during the 30 day course of the exhibition, BRRGS Generation 1.2 is a life-support system and a space race, cultivating the fastest plants in order to vie for a spot aboard the first lunar greenhouse.
